Embark on an authentic 8-day dog sledding expedition through the heart of the Yukon wilderness. Covering approximately 200 km, this immersive journey takes you across an extraordinary variety of landscapes, including boreal forests, frozen lakes, alpine tundra, glacial valleys, and vast mountain plateaus shaped by thousands of years of geological history.
The expedition is divided into two distinct wilderness journeys, each leading to a remote backcountry camp. Midway through the adventure, you’ll enjoy a well-earned rest day dedicated to discovering the rich traditions, history, and way of life of Yukon First Nations peoples.
Accommodation throughout the expedition combines adventure and comfort, including three nights in our cozy log cabin, four nights in wood heated wilderness tents, and a final night in a comfortable Whitehorse hotel. All winter camping equipment is provided.
Over the course of eight unforgettable days, you will learn and master the art of mushing while developing a unique bond with your own team of sled dogs. Along the way, you may encounter an abundance of northern wildlife, including wood bison, moose, elk, white-tailed deer, snowshoe hares, squirrels, gray jays, ptarmigan, and coyotes. While wolves and wolverines are rarely seen, their tracks are often found throughout the wilderness. On clear nights, the Yukon sky may reward you with spectacular displays of the Northern Lights.

We will pick you up from your hotel in Whitehorse and, if required, make any last-minute shopping stops before heading to Beyond Expeditions’ base.
Upon arrival, we’ll ensure that your winter clothing and equipment fit comfortably and review everything you’ll need for the adventure ahead. You will then be introduced to your personal team of 5–6 sled dogs, who will accompany you throughout the expedition.
After learning the fundamentals of dog sledding, dog care, and trail safety, you’ll enjoy a training run near our base to begin developing your mushing skills. In the evening, we’ll share stories about the history of dog sledding in the Yukon and present the route and highlights of the days ahead before settling into our cozy log cabin for the night.
On Day 2, we’ll set out for Bison Camp, located on the spectacular Taye Lake Plateau. With panoramic northern views and Mount Sifton (2,150 m) rising in the distance, this camp offers one of the finest locations in the region for Northern Lights viewing.
For the next two days, we’ll travel through the natural habitat of Yukon wood bison, keeping watch for these magnificent animals as we’ll explore the surrounding wilderness.
Life in camp is a shared adventure. Guests participate in daily camp activities, including setting up camp, gathering firewood and water, feeding and caring for your dogs, and preparing for the next day’s journey. In the evening, your guide will introduce the remarkable world of sled dogs, discussing their training, athletic abilities, nutrition, and unique relationship with mushers.
On Day 3, we’ll explore the valleys surrounding Taye and Utshi Lakes, travelling through a diverse landscape framed by rugged peaks rising to nearly 1,800 m.
On Day 4, we’ll return to Beyond Expeditions’ base via an alternate route, offering new scenery and trail experiences. Back at the cabin, you’ll enjoy a hot meal, a warm shower, and a comfortable night’s rest.
Today is a well-deserved rest day for both the dogs and the crew.
After a leisurely morning and a hearty brunch, we will visit a local First Nations community to learn about their history, culture and traditions. This unique cultural experience provides valuable insight into the people who have lived and travelled these northern landscapes for generations.
On Day 6, we’ll begin the second stage of the expedition, travelling into the spectacular glacial valley of Jojo Lake.
Situated at approximately 900 m and surrounded by peaks reaching over 2,000 m, this valley is home to the famous Jojo Peak—a striking nunatak that remained above the ice during the last glaciation due to its elevation and resistant rock formation.
Our destination is Big Pine Camp, located on an alpine tundra plateau dotted with hardy pine trees. Deep snow, breathtaking scenery, and more challenging trails make this one of the most exciting sections of the expedition.
That evening, your guide will share the fascinating geological story behind the formation of Jojo Lake Valley and Jojo Peak.
On Day 7, we’ll embark on a spectacular day trip to the base of Jojo Peak and the lake that bears its name, travelling through some of the most dramatic scenery of the entire expedition.
On Day 8, we begin our final descent back to Beyond Expeditions along one of our favorite trails. By now, you’ll have gained confidence and skill on the sled, allowing you to fully appreciate how far you’ve come as a musher.
Back at the base, you’ll have the opportunity to feed your dogs one final time, say goodbye to your four-legged teammates, and reflect on the adventure you’ve shared together. We then transfer you to a comfortable hotel in Whitehorse for your final night.
